[owen] Test

June -
Interesting article. My first thought was transfer that student to a work
environment. Do we reward hard work more than quality work? Last week you
posted that wonderful story about students in India driving electric cars.
(I meant to tell you that the article made me smile too.) Clearly other
countries are now rewarding quality work and are reaping benefits from the
quality work.

I personally think that quality work is better than hard work. That's not
to say that someone who works hard shouldn't be rewarded, just not as well
as someone who produces quality work.

On topic, but with less levity is a recent article in NYT that I enjoyed
reading. Last spring I spent several weeks in a 10th grade English classroom
where I was baffled by a common notion of entitlement based on the student's
perception of his effort, completely apart from the quality of his product.

What do you all think? Does trying hard merit a good grade, even if the work
is pitiful?

Class, as your representative, I hereby move that we not be given a test
first thing Monday morning.
Can I get a second?

O.K. class, put your notes away and get ready for the test.

Susan, put away your cell phone.

Yes, Dian, I reminded you friday that there would be a test today.

No, Bea, it is not open note.

Steve, keep you eyes off Becky's paper.

Dean, is that little short pencil you're using a #2?
